About the Glastonbury Emerging Talent competition

Benefits

Pretty much everybody has heard of Glastonbury, right? If you’re talking about music festivals you simply cannot go without mentioning Michael and Emily Eavis’ iconic gathering of art, culture, music and all-round fantastic fun. BBC Glastonbury coverage is a highlight every year, for example, and Glastonbury tickets are quite literally like gold-dust each and every year.

There were no doubt thousands of aspiring musicians being encouraged by Glastonbury 2019 performances last year, as there would have been at Glastonbury 2020 if it weren’t for a global pandemic we all know about.

But here’s the thing: the path to actually play at Glastonbury can be long, winding, and almost invisible, despite the hundreds of stages that make up the festival. We’re always down to help here at Winzum, so we thought we’d explore the Glastonbury Emerging Talent competition – a vital place for aspiring musicians to try and fulfil their Glastonbury dreams.

Glastonbury: The biggest and most iconic musical festival on Earth

Glastonbury Festival started from very humble beginnings all the way back in 1970, when Michael Eavis held the Pilton Festival at the original Worthy Farm site. The Kinks headlined, and the foundations were set for the growth of one of the most important musical gatherings on Earth.

It wasn’t until the 1980s, however, that Glastonbury became an officially annual event (other than a few fallow years here and there to let the farm recover). Over the next few decades Glastonbury grew consistently in size, with a few legendary performances along the way from the likes of Radiohead and Orbital cementing it as a vital UK constitution.

An overview of the Glastonbury Emerging Talent competition

So, what is the Glastonbury Emerging Talent competition? Well, in essence it is a competition run by Glastonbury in tandem with PRS that gives artists the chance to play at the critically acclaimed music festival each year. It is an incredible initiative, because the vast majority of entrants wouldn’t really have a chance to play at Glastonbury any other way.

As co-organiser Emily Eavis has said herself – “Over the years, the Emerging Talent Competition has helped us to unearth so many incredible artists from across the genres – dozens of whom have been given slots at the Festival.”
