Radio competitions: Not just a relic from the past
At Winzum you might have guessed that we love staying up to date with technological developments, something that will become apparent with our range of online competition prizes. However with that being said, we are also extremely passionate about older forms of technology that may have fallen by the wayside somewhat.
Sure, the rise of television and the Internet is great, but it can sometimes take away from the wonderful medium that is radio. Radio has kept us company for more than a century now, bringing music, literature and radio competitions to the masses all around the world. We love competitions at Winzum, so we thought we would explore radio competitions, and show you that they are not just a relic from the past.
A brief history of radio
Radio is ever-present in our lives in the 21st century, however we are willing to bet that not many people have the best appreciation of its remarkable history. The first ever commercial radio transmission is still disputed, however the most popular claim is for 1906, where a man called Reginald Fessenden made a broadcast on Christmas Eve.
This didn’t come courtesy of a commercial radio station, however, and this had to wait until 1919, where the PCGG Deutsch station became arguably the first. In 1926 our very own BBC radio was launched, at the time being the world’s first national radio broadcaster.
When was the first radio competitions launched?
Because of how quickly commercial radio broadcasting spread across the world after WWII it is difficult to exactly pinpoint when the world’s first radio competition started. There is evidence of rudimentary free radio competitions even running through WWII as a means to boost morale.
It wasn’t until the 1960s that radio competitions truly became massively popular, coinciding with the improved telephone switchboard technology that meant more people could phone in.
How to give yourself the best chance of winning a radio competition
As with other competitions such as online competitions, the best way to make sure you are winning radio competitions is simply to keep an eye out for them and enter as many as possible. Additionally, with classic phone-in radio competitions you also need to be good at thinking on your feet, as many questions will come in a timed question round.
For this reason it is also a good idea to do some general knowledge quiz question revision, or music question revision if the radio competition you have entered as music-centric.
Popular 21st century radio competitions
Although there are more people entering free online competitions than free radio competitions these days, 21st century radio competitions are still rather popular. In fact, you might even stand more chance with radio competitions such as the Heart Radio competition or Magic Radio competition because less people are entering.
These are just a few of the most popular 21st century radio competitions, and you can find them here [some of the best radio competitions to keep an eye on].
