Well, you know what we’re like too – always trying to help you lovely lot out in any way we can. Although in many ways it has never been easier to sell yourself as a musician, it has also never been harder at the same time. It got us thinking, how could we give a helping hand? Take a gander at some of our Winzum top tips for aspiring musicians!

Embrace the Spotify wave (but not too much)

The music industry has changed at a very fundamental level over the last decade or so, with online music streaming sites such as Spotify becoming by far the most popular way for music to be consumed. If you want to learn more about this particular side of things head to our history of Spotify article available here [a history of Spotify].

Whilst Spotify certainly has its negative sides, one thing you cannot deny is that the platform has made it a lot easier for previously unknown artists to break into the main stream. Any aspiring musicians should be embracing the Spotify wave, however at the same time it’s important not to put all of your eggs in the same basket.

Check out competitions from established organisations

One of the classic routes to music success is through winning a competition like the X Factor, however far too many people don’t appreciate all the other slightly smaller competitions and what they can do for you. As an aspiring musician you should be entering anything you can, and the prizes can vary from a financial grant, all the way through to things like festival appearances!

Like the sound of that last one in particular? Well, the almighty Glastonbury Festival holds a competition to play every year – check out our Winzum round-up here [about the Glastonbury emerging talent competition].

Be patient and keep the passion

You need patience in all areas of life, however aspiring musicians are going to need as much as they can get, because the road to the top is often very long and winding. It is very important to recognise that success doesn’t come overnight, and even more important not to get disheartened by this either.

Keep on pushing! That’s the mantra, and as long as you still make sure you have a burning passion for music anything is possible.

Understand the importance of social media

Just like with Spotify, the emergence of social media over the last decade or so has completely changed the way musicians’ can market themselves. In fact, because of social media smaller artists can now have a legitimate way to build and reach a new audience, all without a huge marketing team behind them.

But in order to unlock this possibility you will have to understand the importance of social media, and also play it tactical when it comes to your social media marketing strategy.
